  1. We rented a house for 5 months which had mold in it while our new house was getting built. I cleaned some of the mold from closets and now that we are in our new house I seem to be the one who is bothered by our posessions such as furniture and clothing, etc. I washed all the clothes in borax many times. Could there still be spores in them which are causing my sinus pain and headaches? - Anonymous from Nova Scotia

  2. we recently had a fire in our home. the insurance company had a large amount of clothing removed and sent through an ozone chamber at a dry cleaner specializing in fire restoration. The clothes have now been returned to us, but seem to have a strong chemical-type smell. Is this common? are the clothes salvagable? Also, they intend to put much of our wood furniture and books through an ozone chamber as well. Is this effective? will these items be damaged? Many thanks. - don from new york, new york

  5. I am looking at buying a condo that is being renovated from apartments. The past tenants were heavy smokers and the apartment smells of smoke. They lived there approximately 3 years. The building used to be an old manufacturing plant before the apartments. The condo remodelling will include the installation of new carpets, a new paint job, painting the existing wood cupboards, and other modifications. Half of the walls are brick, and the ceilings (and 4 support beams) are all wood beams. There are units available that were not smoked in, but they do not fit my needs as well. How likely is it that with the upgrades to carpeting, etc that I will be able to completely remove the smell of the smoke? What additional work, if any, will be needed to take out the smell? - Brent from Coopersville, MI

  6. Does ozoning older furniture sometimes cause finish damage? I have several furniture pieces from the 1950's that look like they have been scrubbed with a rough brush. The cleaning company hired by my insurance said that they only ozoned. Also, I have a silk dress that didn't have any visible stains, and now I can see armpit stains and a stain on the skirt. Does smoke or the cleaning process cause old stains to surface and be visible? - Ginger from Scappoose. Oregon

  7. Hi- I have a rental cottage. The former tenant burned incense candles for about 1.5 years. Despite airing out the place the smell persists. The walls were recently painted (flat) and the carpet is indoor/outdoor. What do you recommend for odor removal. I have spoken with several companies who recommend an ozone machine. One says the machine will do the job on walls & carpet. The other says I need machine as well as a wash down of walls with microban or something similar. What do you think?? - Anonymous from Inverness, CA

Yes ozone should work but you may have encapsulated the odor by painting the walls. They should be washed with a microban product or similar, then sealed with a primer prior to painting. I would recommend heating the house up to 72degrees then installing a ozone machine, by heating the house the pores will expanding allowing the ozone to penetrate deeper and should remove any remaining odor.    « less

That is a very tough one, alot will factor in how long the items were exposed to heat and soot, what type of soot, most of the time we have the items test cleaned by a local drycleaning company to see if the stains will even come out. 90 pct of the time all cotton shirts are considered damaged due to cotton being a natural fiber.    « less
  10. Regarding yesterday's question, I'd like to ask about a few more items: knives with wood handles (with finish on them), the ribbon attached to medals, wood frame that holds medals. Also, recently I washed the metal tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, etc) in vinegar which seemed to do the trick, but the ones with soft plastic/rubber handles still had some odor left - same for the plastic cased electric tools. Do you think more washing will help? Thanks so much for your input. - Anonymous from Arizona
