  2. I am renting a doublewide mobile home and had a fire that caused a lot of smoke damage to my ceiling and walls. Our landlord has no insurance on this property. We are cleaning up the fire damage ourselves. What can I use to clean the walls and ceiling. We have tried a few things but it seems that we are just going over it over and over while smearing it. It seems useless. We also have the popcorn painted ceiling and have no clue how we are going to tackle that except to "spray" paint and I am trying to avoid that. Please help!! - Laurie from Northport, Alabama

  5. Hi Jesse, I recently put a pot of pinto beans on to cook, and forgot about them when I went out to run a few errands. They were left on high heat for about 2 hours. When I returned home, the smoke alarm was going, and the entire house was completely filled with thick smoke. I left a fan blowing out the back door, bringing in fresh air thru open windows throughout the house for 2 solid days. The next 2 days I've kept a hepa air filter running all day & night. It has now been 4 days since my accident and every room still smells like a smoking room at a cheap motel. Every article of clothing smells, as well as furniture, etc. What do you recommend to eliminate the odor, & what does a professional service usually cost for such services? Thanks in advance - Jaime' from California

What you have is a protein fire and is very difficult to remove, but it can. All surfaces of the entire home will need to be wash several times this is best done while the home is warmed to at least 72 degrees. This will open the pores and allow the wash to be effective. All linen, clothing, drapery, carpeting, soft furniture be cleaned and deodorized, if possible off site. All other personal property will also require cleaning. Once all contents and building surface have been cleaned including the HVAC unit then house should be deodorized using ozone. Depending on the extent of odor you may have to be out for several days in odor for the ozone to properly deodorize. If you need more info please contact my office at 831-899-3938. Sorry about your loss.    « less

Depending on how many years they have been smoking in the home will make a big difference on well the odor can be removed. My recommendation is to wet wash all surface (windows, upper and lower cabinets, walls, ceiling, light fixture, etc) using a heavy degreaser and this should be done a minimum of 3 to 4 times, rinse all areas after each wash. All soft good throughout will require heavy cleaning also, in many cases the carpeting throughout should be removed and replaced after cleaning completed. Clean heating and ventalation system, and the use of an ozone machine after all cleaning is completed for any remaining odors. 7. How do I get heavy yellow and dark nicotine stains out of a rug? We are trying to shampoo my mom's carpets (she just passed away) and some spots are so heavy in smoke they won't seem to budge with a shampoer. The heavy spots are right in front of the doorways. Any advice you can give will be real helpful. We are trying to sell the house and can't afford new rugs. Other than the nicotine the rugs are in perfect shape. thanks, Nancy Burkhart - Nancy Burkhart from Cincinnati, OH 45103

These areas around door are the most damaged due to air passing through like a vacuum. Have you hired a professional carpet cleaner to try and clean these areas? 8. Dear sir, I have a Christmas ornament that I bought when my son was born. It is 16 years old. It is a small round wreath shaped ornament with a little circle cut out in the middle for a picture. It is a light cream color made out of the same thing as a doile. It is embroidery with the words baby's first Christmas and has little bunnies embroidery on it. The edges is scalloped doile lace. We had a leak under our house from our ice maker that busted. We didn't know the water had filled up a tub of our Chritmas things. Now a lot of my ornaments have been sitting in water for a while. How can I get the dark water stains and dirt out of this ornament? Like I said it is made out of the same material as a doile. Thank you, Jill Sarrett - Jill Sarrett from Hurricane WV

Wood is a very porous material and will require a wet wash using a wood cleaner or 10% bleach and water. (be very careful as not to damage the fininsh, this should only be used on raw surfaces.) If odor is still present I recommend to have the interior sufaces of the chest of drawers be sealed by a refinisher or have the item placed in a ozone chamber by a local restoration contractor.
