    Building materials are very porous and will require heavy cleaning espeically in the kitchen area. All surfaces should be washed down using an mild soap detergent along with several rinse cycles. This will include inside and out side of all upper and lower cabinet, all soft good items such as drapery, linen, table clothes should be laundered. All walls and ceiling should be washed and rinsed as well. If odor is still present I highly recommend you contact a local Restoration Contractor for the use of an Ozone machine.   2. I have had a fire in my dog grooming shop (luckily we were closed at the time and no one was hurt!). My appointment book and customer record cards were not burned, but smell horribly of smoke so I can't bring them in my house. Is there a way or a product I can use to at least REDUCE the smoke odor so I can bring them inside and recreate the records? Right now they are on my front porch! Thanks - Hope from Rumson NJ

Check with a local restoration company to see if they have an ozone chamber, this will help remove 90 pct of the odor. Pleae call me if you need further assistance.     There are some products out there which are labeled as rust stain remover but I would highly recommend to have the dry cleaners perform this if task.    » more
    There are some products out there which are labeled as rust stain remover but I would highly recommend to have the dry cleaners perform this if task. If some of these products are left to long on the material it can cause more damage and the stain may become permanent.   « less

    First of all how long has the recliner been in a smoke filled environment? Yes, most of the time nicotine can be removed but this will depend on the severity of the nicotine damages. Heavy upholstery steam cleaning and one to two days in a ozone chamber will work in most cases. Check with your local restoration specialist.   8. We recently had a slow burning fire in our 25 yr. old manufactured home with significant fire smoke and waterdamage. The insurance adjuster is recommending ozone treatment for the smokedamage. Our contractor suggests thatthis is unlikely to remove the smell without replacing the insulation and the panelling on the walls and ceiling. What do you think? - Anonymous from ARNOLD, cALIF

    Ozone is a very strong odor oxidizer and will remove smoke odor but there are several steps to perform before using ozone. 1) all non-salvagable building materials must be removed. 2) All porus materials such as carpeting, padding, insulation if heavy impacted should be removed. 3) Paneling should be remove in order to get to the soot behind them. 4) All building surfaces needs to be washed and rinsed. 5) HVAC system needs to be cleaned and inspected. 6) Prior to using ozone to remove soot/smoke odor the structure should be warmed up to 70 deg or high for a couple of hours, the building materials will expand and this will help the ozone to remove heavy odors.     That is a tough one, unfinished pine is will obsorbe the oily product and will more than likely impregnate the wood. You can try bleaching the impacted areas to remove as much and the creosote as possible. Let it dry and lightly sand to remove any additional staining.     Yes these items can be saved! There are a couple of different ways to deodorize these very porus items. 1) place all paper products so they can be exposed to fresh air and sun light, this may take a few weeks to remove reduce the odor. 2) contract with a local restoration company that have the capability to deodorize using ozone.
